My name is Joe Burrage ETCS (SS)(RET) and I was the COB"Chief of the Boat"
on Trieste when she deployed to the mid-Atlantic to dive on the wreckage of the USS Scorpion.
John Craven was the chief scientist at the
time. I stumbled upon this page and it interests me greatly. It appears to me that the true
story of Trieste's evolution has never been published. I find that amazing for this day and age. Yes,
Steve, I am probably that very same ET1 from the Pomfret (probably my favoriteboat), that you recall.
Do you remember Ed Carmen (ST1), the lead sonar tech? After Pomfret,I went to Sub School Staff in New
London for a tour of instructor duty, thenon to USS Rock, Sub Flot 1 staff and Trieste. Glad to hear from you.
I will think about writing something up about Trieste and the Scorpion investigation. However, I am not sure what
information on the bathyscaph is still classified. Your page and Dr. Craven's write-up provide the only text
on the subject of T-II/XX that I have found anywhere. It is as if the full Trieste tale has almost totally
been left out of the history books. The little information available is very misleading. I suppose
lots of stuff is probably still classified.I ran across the
Cruise Book for the Scorpion Phase II Operations. The
introductory page attests to the uniqueness of the
operations while omitting the details... Also attached, is a photo of the
Trieste II crew.Crew
